What Is CDX Plywood?

CDX plywood is the construction industry’s standard structural sheathing panel. The name decodes simply: C denotes the face veneer grade, D the back veneer grade, and X stands for Exterior-grade glue — a waterproof phenolic resin bond that holds the plies together even after repeated moisture exposure.

That exterior glue is critical in South Florida’s climate. Miami-Dade and Broward see high ambient humidity year-round, and buildings under construction are routinely exposed to afternoon rain events. Interior-glue panels delaminate. CDX doesn’t. For roof sheathing, wall sheathing, and subfloor work in this market, CDX isn’t just preferred — it’s the code-expected baseline.

All CDX we stock carries an APA Rated Sheathing stamp, which means every panel has been independently tested and certified to span, load, and performance values published by the APA — The Engineered Wood Association. When your inspector looks at the panel, that stamp is what closes the conversation.

CDX Plywood Applications in South Florida

From residential roof decks to Miami Beach event staging floors, CDX is the jobsite workhorse. Here’s how South Florida contractors use the panels we supply.

Roof Sheathing

CDX is the standard roof deck panel for South Florida residential and commercial projects. APA-rated, exterior glue resists Miami-Dade’s humidity throughout the construction phase and beyond.

Wall Sheathing

Structural wall sheathing for wood-frame construction, providing racking resistance and a weather barrier backing. The exterior glue bond performs in South Florida’s hurricane-season build windows.

Subfloor & Decking

Tongue-and-groove CDX subfloor panels for residential and commercial floors. Delivers a stiff, stable platform for finished flooring with the load capacity today’s building codes demand.

Concrete Forming

CDX holds up through multiple pours when properly coated with form-release oil. A cost-effective forming panel for slabs, walls, and columns — field-proven on South Florida commercial projects.

Event Staging & Production

Miami’s event and production industry relies on CDX for staging floors, backwalls, and temporary structures. We supply Black Stage Corp (Miami Beach Convention Center), Eventstar Structures (Collins Ave), and production companies across South Florida.

Temporary Structures & Site Work

Protection boards, hoarding panels, temporary shoring, and site work. CDX delivers structural performance at job-site economics — the right panel when you need it to work hard without a premium spend.

Import vs. Domestic CDX: Which Do You Need?

We stock both import and domestic CDX, and the right choice depends on your application. Here’s the practical breakdown:

Domestic CDX is manufactured from Southern Yellow Pine (SYP) — one of the stiffest, strongest structural softwood species available in North America. Domestic panels carry full APA certification, meet all Miami-Dade building code requirements for structural sheathing, and are the preferred choice for load-bearing roof and wall systems. If your project inspector is going to look at the stamp, use domestic.

Import CDX is manufactured from mixed softwood species and graded to an OES (Other Engineered Species) equivalent standard. The price point is lower, and it performs well in non-structural and temporary applications — concrete forming, event staging floors, hoarding panels, and site protection. For production companies and forming contractors, import CDX hits the cost target without overbuilding.

Both grades are in stock at our Doral warehouse. Availability of specific grades fluctuates with supply — call us to confirm what’s on hand today: (305) 884-0860.

CDX Plywood Miami — Frequently Asked Questions

What thickness of CDX plywood do I need for roof sheathing in Miami-Dade?

For standard rafter spacing (16" or 24" on center), 5/8" CDX is the most common specification under Miami-Dade building code. Where rafter spacing is wider, where heavy tile roofing systems are used, or where a structural engineer has specified additional stiffness, 3/4" CDX is the right choice. Miami-Dade’s High-Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) wind requirements mean your roof deck needs to be both structurally sound and properly fastened — confirm the span rating on your APA-stamped panels against your specific rafter layout. When in doubt, call us and we’ll help you read the stamp. We supply both 5/8" and 3/4" CDX from stock.

Do you sell CDX plywood by the sheet or by the unit?

Both. Trade account customers receive unit pricing — a full unit (lift) of CDX at the best available price tier. Partial quantities are also available for contractors who need less than a full lift. Pricing is based on quantity and current market; call us for today’s number: (305) 884-0860. If you’re buying regularly, opening a trade account is the fastest way to lock in consistent pricing with no retail markup on every order.

What’s the difference between import and domestic CDX plywood?

Domestic CDX is made from Southern Yellow Pine (SYP), a dense, stiff structural species grown in the U.S. Southeast. It carries full APA Rated Sheathing certification and is the specification-grade choice for structural roof sheathing, wall sheathing, and subfloor. Import CDX is made from mixed softwood species (graded OES) and costs less. It performs well for concrete forming, event staging floors, hoarding panels, and other temporary or non-structural applications where full APA certification isn’t required. Both are in stock — availability of specific grades varies, so call to confirm what’s on hand today.

Do you deliver CDX plywood to Broward County?

Yes. We provide same-day forklift delivery throughout both Miami-Dade and Broward County. Order before noon for same-day delivery. Our trucks handle the drop-off — forklift delivery is available as an add-on — quoted separately. For specific delivery timing or large project scheduling, call us directly at (305) 884-0860 and we’ll coordinate with your site superintendent.

Can I open a trade account for regular CDX orders?

Yes. International Plywood & Lumber has been extending trade credit to South Florida contractors since 1983 — over 43 years in business with more than 1,500 active trade accounts. A trade account gives you consistent bulk pricing, streamlined reordering, and no retail markup on your CDX purchases. To apply, call us at (305) 884-0860 or stop by our Doral warehouse. The application process is straightforward and we typically have accounts set up quickly for established contractors and production companies.
