S4S Lumber Guide

S4S Lumber Buyer’s Guide: Sizes, Grades & Uses for Miami Contractors

By International Plywood & Lumber Inc.  |  Miami, FL  |  Updated 2025

What S4S Means — and Why It Matters

S4S stands for Surfaced 4 Sides. It describes lumber that has been run through a planer and jointer on all four faces, producing a smooth, dimensionally consistent board with clean edges and flat surfaces. The result is a board that is ready to use immediately — no additional milling, jointing, or planing required before installation or fabrication.

For contractors, cabinet shops, millwork fabricators, and production companies, S4S is the standard specification for any interior application where the board will be seen or touched. Windowsills, shelving, door trim, face frames, furniture components, baseboards, set construction, and mantel shelves — all of these are S4S applications.

The alternative is rough-sawn lumber or partially surfaced (S2S) material, which requires additional machining before it can be used in finished applications. Rough-sawn material has its place — primarily in structural framing and exterior applications where appearance doesn’t matter. For anything that gets painted, finished, or left in the line of sight, S4S is the specification.

S4S vs Rough-Sawn vs S2S

ProductSurface ConditionReady to Use?Best ForCost

S2S2 faces surfaced, edges roughRequires edge jointingGlue-ups, wide panels, custom widthsMid
Rough-SawnAll faces rough from the sawRequires full millingStructural framing, timber constructionLower

For production environments where time is money, S4S eliminates an entire workflow step. A cabinet shop that buys S4S face-frame stock doesn’t need to run it through a jointer or planer — it goes straight to the table saw and then to the cabinet. That labor savings adds up significantly on high-volume runs.

Common S4S Sizes and Uses

1×2 (Actual: 3/4″ × 1-1/2″)

The narrowest commonly stocked S4S size. Used for paint sticks, small trim applications, decorative battens, thin frame components, and custom hardware backing. At this width, the board is primarily a trim and accent component — not a structural element.

1×4 (Actual: 3/4″ × 3-1/2″)

One of the most versatile S4S widths in the market. Used for cabinet face frames, window and door casing, bunk bed rails, set construction flat goods, decorative paneling battens, and picture-frame molding stock. The 1×4 is the bread-and-butter S4S width for millwork shops and cabinet fabricators.

1×6 (Actual: 3/4″ × 5-1/2″)

The go-to width for shelving, baseboard material, decorative wall paneling, and board-and-batten siding. At 5-1/2″ actual width, it’s wide enough for shallow shelf applications without the cost premium of wider boards. Also widely used in set construction for wall cladding and scenic panels.

1×8 (Actual: 3/4″ × 7-1/4″)

A good all-purpose furniture substrate width. Used for step risers, small tabletop components, window seat tops, narrow shelving, and drawer fronts. In millwork, 1×8 is frequently used for casing profiles and built-up architraves.

1×10 (Actual: 3/4″ × 9-1/4″)

One of our top-selling wholesale S4S products. Used for window treatment boards, small mantel shelves, wide furniture components, closet shelf systems, and built-in shelving. National distributors order 1×10×12 in quantities of 600–1,000 pieces — it’s a high-velocity SKU across multiple trade categories.

1×12 (Actual: 3/4″ × 11-1/4″)

The widest standard S4S size in regular production. Used for wide shelving, workbench tops, wide baseboard profiles, decorative wide-plank paneling, and large furniture components. At 11-1/4″ actual width, 1×12 approaches the practical limit of solid lumber stability without the warping risk that wider boards carry in South Florida’s humidity.

Length Selection: 8ft vs 12ft vs 16ft

S4S lumber is typically available in 8-foot, 12-foot, and 16-foot lengths. Choosing the right length minimizes waste and optimizes your cut list:

  • 8-foot lengths: Best for shelf components, short trim runs, set construction panels, and applications where cuts are under 96″. Easy to handle, fits in most vehicles and elevators. Higher waste on longer runs due to offcuts.
  • 12-foot lengths: The most versatile production length. Works for baseboard runs, window treatment boards in most residential applications, furniture rails, and most cabinet components. Our best-selling length for most S4S widths.
  • 16-foot lengths: Ideal for long trim runs (crown molding, baseboard in large rooms), continuous shelving runs, and applications where minimizing end joints is important. Requires a vehicle or delivery that can accommodate 16-foot lumber — factor this into your delivery planning.

For production volume orders, buying longer lengths typically reduces per-lineal-foot cost but requires more careful cut list planning to avoid excess waste. Run your cut list before ordering and select the length that minimizes offcuts.

Premium vs Premium Plus Grade

International Plywood stocks S4S pine lumber in two primary grades:

  • Premium: Clear to near-clear surfaces with minimal knots. Small, tight knots (under 1″) are permitted. The standard specification for painted cabinet and furniture applications. Most popular grade for production shops.
  • Premium Plus (Select & Better): Near-knot-free faces with minimal allowable defects. Used for applications where the wood grain will be stained or clear-finished, or where knots are completely unacceptable. Commands a price premium — typically reserved for high-end millwork and natural-finish furniture.

For the majority of painted applications, Premium grade is the right call. Paying the Premium Plus premium for painted work where knots will be filled and covered anyway is not cost-effective.

Pine vs SPF S4S for Different Applications

S4S lumber is available in two primary species groups:

  • Southern Yellow Pine (SYP): Denser, harder, and heavier than SPF. Better for applications requiring structural performance — bunk bed frames, heavy shelving, workbench tops. Takes paint well but can be more difficult to nail without pre-drilling.
  • SPF (Spruce-Pine-Fir): Lighter and easier to work than SYP. Takes fasteners more easily, machines cleanly, and is the preferred species for millwork, trim, and furniture applications where weight and workability matter more than structural strength.

For TV and film set construction, SPF S4S is the nearly universal choice — lighter, faster to work, and more forgiving with scenic fastening hardware. For load-bearing shelving or heavy-use furniture, SYP’s density advantage is worth the additional weight.

South Florida Considerations

Buying S4S lumber in Miami requires attention to a few factors that buyers in drier climates don’t have to worry about:

  • Kiln-dried (KD) is non-negotiable: All S4S lumber should be kiln-dried to a moisture content of 19% or below (ideally 15% or below for interior millwork). Green or air-dried S4S in Miami’s humidity will cup, warp, and split after installation. Always verify KD spec when ordering.
  • Acclimation: Even KD lumber should be acclimated to the installation environment for 24–48 hours before installation in air-conditioned spaces. This is especially important for wide boards (1×10, 1×12).
  • Outdoor applications: Standard S4S pine is not suitable for outdoor use without a thorough moisture-sealing primer and finish system. For outdoor or high-moisture applications, specify pressure-treated S4S or use an exterior-rated wood species.

Ordering in Pallet Quantities

For production shops and distributors ordering in volume, pallet pricing on S4S lumber offers significant savings over per-piece pricing:

  • Standard pallet quantities vary by dimension — typically 120–250 pieces per pallet depending on length and width
  • Pallet orders ship same-day from Doral for orders placed by 10 AM
  • Multi-pallet orders can be combined with plywood and panel product orders on a single delivery
  • Container-quantity pricing is available for national distributors ordering truckloads — call for contract pricing

Our 1×10×12 Premium S4S is our #1 wholesale lumber product. National distributors order 600–1,000 pieces at a time. Ask about pallet and truckload pricing. Call (305) 884-0860.
